Ever feel like this when you hear a teacher talk about the SOLs?

Well, don't worry! The purpose of this section is for me to walk you through each of the literacy SOLs your child is expected to master by the end of first grade. Below, you will find three blog posts under the corresponding SOL section. If you are ready to start, feel free to do so.
What are the SOLs you might be wondering. SOL is an abbreviation for Standards of Learning. These standards represent a set of skills your child is expected to master by the end of the school year. Grades are given on an E (exceeds), M (mastered), P (progressing), and B (below/developing) level (comparable to the 1-4 scale shown below).

Standards-based learning is a very important part of your child's education in Loudoun County. According to researcher Rick Stiggs, student's achievement in standards-based setting will drive
their learning towards a goal, andallow them to celebrate accomplishments both big and small, and
build their self-confidence (Stiggs, 2005, p. 326).
